Crowns & Bridges

A dental crown caps and protects a damaged tooth, while a bridge fills the gap left by a missing tooth. Both are fixed, tooth-coloured restorations available across our five Hong Kong clinics.

Crowns & Bridges at Diestel Dental Group, Hong Kong

Dental crowns

A dental crown is a custom cap that covers a tooth to restore its shape, strength and appearance. A crown may be recommended to protect a tooth weakened by a large filling or a crack, to cover a tooth after root canal treatment, to restore a badly decayed or discoloured tooth, or to top a dental implant. Our crowns are tooth-coloured ceramic, colour-matched to your natural teeth — we are a mercury-free clinic and do not use silver-metal restorations.

Dental bridges

A dental bridge replaces one or more missing teeth by “bridging” the gap. The replacement tooth is held in place by crowns on the neighbouring teeth (or on implants) on either side. As well as restoring your smile and chewing, a bridge helps stop the neighbouring teeth from drifting or tilting into the gap and helps maintain your bite.

Crown or bridge — which do I need?

  • Choose a crown when a single tooth is present but damaged, weakened or root-treated and needs protecting.
  • Choose a bridge when a tooth is missing and you want a fixed (non-removable) replacement supported by the teeth or implants beside the gap.
  • Where a tooth is missing, a dental implant is another fixed option — your dentist can compare these with you.

What to expect

Treatment usually takes two visits: the tooth is prepared and an impression or scan is taken, a temporary restoration is placed, and the final crown or bridge is fitted once it has been made. With good hygiene and regular check-ups, crowns and bridges can last many years.

How much do crowns and bridges cost in Hong Kong?

Fees depend on the material and the number of units. As a reference, the Prince Philip Dental Hospital’s private-patient fee schedule lists:

Restoration PPDH reference fee
Crown or bridge (per unit) HK$7,700 – HK$12,000
Bridge typically several units — priced accordingly

What affects the fee:

  • Number of units: a crown is one unit; a bridge joins several, so a three-unit bridge replacing one missing tooth has a reference fee of about HK$23,100–36,000.
  • Material: all-ceramic and zirconia differ in strength and translucency, and in fee.
  • How the crown is made: a crown can be made by a dental laboratory, usually over two or more visits with a temporary crown in between, or designed and milled in the clinic with CEREC, which allows same-day crowns in some cases. The two methods are priced differently. Within the group, CEREC is at Smith & Jain and Diestel & Partners.

Fees above are reference fees from the Prince Philip Dental Hospital private-patient fee schedule, for reference only and not our clinics’ actual fees; your exact fee is confirmed after an examination. Please consult a dentist for advice on your situation.

Booking at your nearest clinic

Crown and bridge treatment is available across our five Hong Kong clinics. Our dentists speak English, Cantonese, Mandarin and other languages. Choose the location most convenient for you:

Equipment varies by clinic; your dentist decides after an examination whether it is needed.

Related: A smaller cavity may only need a filling; a heavily damaged tooth may need a crown. Missing a tooth? Compare a bridge with a dental implant or dentures. A crown often follows root canal treatment.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a crown and a bridge?
A crown caps a single damaged tooth to protect and restore it. A bridge replaces one or more missing teeth, supported by crowns on the teeth or implants beside the gap.
Are the crowns metal?
Our crowns are tooth-coloured ceramic, colour-matched to your natural teeth. We are a mercury-free clinic and do not use silver-metal restorations.
How long do crowns and bridges last?
With good oral hygiene and regular check-ups, they can last many years. Keeping the supporting teeth and gums healthy is key to their lifespan.
How many visits does it take?
Usually two: one to prepare the tooth and take an impression or scan, and one to fit the final restoration once it has been made.
Bridge or implant — which is better?
A bridge uses the neighbouring teeth for support and is often quicker; an implant replaces the tooth without involving the neighbours. Your dentist can compare both for your case.
How much does a crown cost in Hong Kong?
The Prince Philip Dental Hospital’s private-patient fee schedule lists a crown or bridge at HK$7,700–12,000 per unit; a bridge is priced by the number of units. These are reference fees only, not our clinics’ actual fees; your fee is confirmed after an assessment.
