What are clear aligners?

Clear aligners are transparent, removable trays that move your teeth in small steps. They are nearly invisible, have no metal wires or brackets to irritate the mouth, and can be taken out to eat and clean your teeth. Invisalign is one of the most widely used clear aligner systems, and “clear aligners” is what many people in Hong Kong search for when they want this discreet option.

How treatment works

• You wear each aligner 20–22 hours a day, removing it only to eat, to drink hot or coloured drinks, and to brush.
• You change to the next aligner about every 1–2 weeks, so your teeth move gradually.
• Wearing them for fewer hours than advised can lengthen treatment and affect the result.
• After each new aligner you may feel slight tightness or pressure for a few days, which usually eases quickly.

How long does clear aligner treatment take?

This depends on how much movement your case needs and is confirmed after a digital scan and assessment. As a general guide, treatment commonly takes about 12–24 months — shorter for mild cases, longer for more complex bites. The number of review visits also varies from case to case. When treatment finishes, you must wear a retainer as directed to prevent your teeth from drifting back.

Clear aligners vs braces

• Appearance: aligners are nearly invisible; fixed braces are visible (metal) or less noticeable (ceramic).
• Comfort: aligners have no wires or brackets; braces can occasionally rub.
• Convenience: aligners are removable for eating and cleaning, but rely on you wearing them consistently.
• Suitability: aligners suit many cases; some complex bites are better treated with braces. A consultation will advise.

How much do clear aligners cost in Hong Kong?
