Professional whitening uses a controlled whitening gel to lighten the natural shade of your teeth. Because it is supervised by a dentist, the gums are protected and the strength is matched to your teeth — safer and more predictable than unregulated products.

In-chair vs take-home whitening

  • In-chair whitening: carried out at the clinic in a single visit, with the gums protected — a fast, single-visit way to see a change.
  • Take-home whitening: custom trays and professional gel to use at home over a couple of weeks, at your own pace.

Many people start with a professional cleaning, which removes surface stains, before whitening the underlying shade.

What results to expect

Whitening lightens your natural teeth to a brighter, natural-looking shade — we do not aim for an unnatural bright-white. Results vary from person to person depending on your starting shade and the cause of the staining, and some deep discolouration responds better to veneers. Existing fillings, crowns and veneers do not change colour with whitening. Results are not permanent and can be topped up over time.

Is whitening safe?

Professional whitening supervised by a dentist is considered safe for most people. Some short-lived tooth sensitivity during or after treatment is common and usually settles quickly. A check-up first makes sure your teeth and gums are healthy and that whitening is suitable for you.
