Wisdom Tooth Removal & Extractions at Diestel Dental Group, Hong Kong

When does a wisdom tooth need removing?

Wisdom teeth are the last molars to come through, usually in the late teens or early twenties. There is often not enough room for them, so they can become impacted (stuck), come through at an angle, or be hard to clean. Common reasons to remove a wisdom tooth include repeated pain or swelling, infection around the tooth, decay that cannot be restored, or damage to the tooth in front. Not every wisdom tooth needs to come out — a dentist will advise after an examination and X-ray.

What the procedure involves

  1. Assessment. An X-ray shows the position of the tooth and its roots and their relation to nearby nerves.
  2. Anaesthetic. The area is fully numbed with local anaesthetic; sedation is available for anxious patients.
  3. Removal. A simple tooth is lifted out; an impacted tooth may need a small procedure to remove it in sections.
  4. Aftercare. You bite on gauze to control bleeding, and you are given clear recovery instructions.

Recovery

  • Some swelling and discomfort for a few days is normal; a cold compress on the outside of the cheek helps.
  • Eat soft, lukewarm food at first and keep the area clean with gentle salt-water rinses (from the day after).
  • Avoid vigorous rinsing, smoking and using a straw early on, which can disturb healing.
  • Contact the clinic if pain worsens after a few days, which can signal a dry socket that is easily treated.

How much does wisdom tooth removal cost in Hong Kong?

The fee depends mainly on how the tooth is positioned — a simple extraction costs less than a surgical removal of an impacted tooth. As a reference, the Prince Philip Dental Hospital’s private-patient fee schedule lists:

Type PPDH reference fee
Simple extraction HK$700 – HK$2,000
Wisdom tooth removal (incl. surgical / impacted) HK$5,000 – HK$10,000

Fees above are reference fees from the Prince Philip Dental Hospital private-patient fee schedule, for reference only and not our clinics’ actual fees; your exact fee is confirmed after an examination. Please consult a dentist for advice on your situation.

Frequently asked questions

Do all wisdom teeth need to be removed?
No. A wisdom tooth that is healthy, well-positioned and easy to clean can often be left. Removal is advised when it causes pain, infection, decay or damage to nearby teeth.
Is wisdom tooth removal painful?
The area is fully numbed with local anaesthetic, so you should not feel pain during the procedure. Some soreness and swelling afterwards is normal and manageable.
How long is the recovery?
Most people feel much better within a few days, with fuller healing over a couple of weeks. Following the aftercare advice helps recovery.
What is a dry socket?
A dry socket is when the healing blood clot is lost too early, causing increased pain a few days after removal. It is easily treated — contact the clinic if pain worsens.
Can I be sedated for the procedure?
Yes. Sedation options are available for anxious patients or more complex removals; ask at your consultation.
How much does it cost in Hong Kong?
The Prince Philip Dental Hospital’s private-patient fee schedule lists a simple extraction at HK$700–2,000 and removal of a wisdom tooth, including surgical removal of an impacted one, at HK$5,000–10,000. These are reference fees only, not our clinics’ actual fees; your fee is confirmed after an assessment.
