What are veneers?

A veneer is a thin shell of porcelain or composite resin bonded to the front surface of a tooth. Veneers can close small gaps between teeth, reshape chipped, worn or slightly uneven teeth, and cover discolouration that whitening cannot change. Because they sit on the visible surface, they are mainly used on the front teeth to improve the look of your smile.

Porcelain vs composite veneers

  • Porcelain veneers: custom-made in a lab, highly stain-resistant and natural-looking, and long-lasting.
  • Composite veneers: built up directly on the tooth in a single visit, more economical and easily repaired, though generally not as long-lasting as porcelain.

All our veneers are tooth-coloured and mercury-free; your dentist will help you choose the material and shade that suit your smile.

When are veneers a good option?

  • Discoloured teeth that do not respond well to whitening.
  • Chipped, cracked or worn front teeth.
  • Small gaps or minor crowding where full orthodontics is not wanted.
  • Teeth that are slightly small or misshapen.

For significant crowding or bite problems, braces or clear aligners may be more suitable — your dentist will advise.

How much do veneers cost in Hong Kong?

Fees depend on the material and the number of teeth. As a reference, the Prince Philip Dental Hospital’s private-patient fee schedule lists:

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between porcelain and composite veneers?
Porcelain veneers are lab-made, very natural-looking, stain-resistant and long-lasting. Composite veneers are built up on the tooth in one visit, are more economical and easily repaired, but generally do not last as long.
Do veneers damage my teeth?
A small amount of the tooth surface may be prepared to seat a porcelain veneer. Your dentist will discuss the approach and any minimal-preparation options at your consultation.
How long do veneers last?
With good care, porcelain veneers can last many years; composite veneers are easily repaired but generally have a shorter lifespan. Avoid biting hard objects and keep up regular check-ups.
Will veneers look natural?
Yes — veneers are tooth-coloured and colour-matched to give a natural look. We do not use unnatural bright-white shades unless that is what you want.
Veneers or whitening?
Whitening changes the shade of your natural teeth; veneers change shape, alignment and colour. If whitening alone will not achieve your goal, veneers may be suitable.
